As a mother of a daughter attending university, her safety is a concern. Although there is increased attention and awareness on the serious problems of sexual violence and rape culture in the university’s , the fact is that the sexual violence continues. Reading the victims statement is something personal and powerful.

” The subject of sexual violence on campus is at the forefront of public consciousness once again this week as details spread online from the trial of a former Stanford University swimmer who was convicted of assaulting an unconscious woman behind a dumpster. Brock Turner, 20, was arrested in January 2015 after two men riding bikes saw him “thrusting” on top of a motionless woman after a Palo Alto frat party”
“Late last week, Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Perskysentenced Turner to six months in county jail and three years’ probation.”
For me, it was the comments by the father and lenient sentence by the Judge that were horrifying with lack accountability, which then sends the wrong message to perpetrators. “The father of a former Stanford University athlete convicted on multiple charges of sexual assault has said his son should not have to go to prison for “20 minutes of action”,”
What about the lifetime of pain for the victim? Misogynistic attitudes blaming the victim..
Clearly lack of accountability and disregard of the seriousness of the crime and willingly oblivious and blinded to the long term impact on the victim. I am curious if there are other victims and fear for the future victims.
