“Politicians and First Nations activists in Quebec say they are shocked and are demanding a widespread investigation following allegations that provincial police abused and sexually assaulted aboriginal women in Val-d’Or.”
“Provincial police have confirmed that they are investigating 14 complaints of abuse of power and assault involving eight officers. The officers remain on the job.”
This is an article that provoked strong emotion. As a retired RCMP officer the allegations are disturbing and I hope there is a FULL investigation by an outside agency to ensure transparency. From my own experience as a victim within the ranks, unraveling the truth from the culture of protectiveness is going to be a challenge. The women are brave to speak up and it is the responsibility of all Canadians to ensure their voices are heard and the perpetrators held accountable. No one is above the law. If no one says anything then nothing changes.
