I loved my job as a RCMP officer and the amazing people I worked with and helped during the twenty years. What I did not like was the abuse of staff and officers by some, a few, but enough to damage the victims lives and careers. No one said anything and those who dared to challenge the command and control suffered retaliation and intimidation. For victims, the long term damage resulting in ruined careers, relationships, PTSD and suicides.
Currently there are several lawsuits against the RCMP. Poor leadership results in a damaged workplace. Bullies and leaders also wear the uniform. Lie, deny then act surprised? From my experience anyone considered ‘the other’ is a target for bullying, racism and gender harassment. If no one speaks up or is willing to enforce respectful workplace policies then nothing changes. I ask the Commissioner during his active service what did he know and when did he know it? Pointing fingers is not working and can result in further internal resentment and lack of cooperation for change. Perhaps there more creative, collaborative and supportive solutions.
