The triumph of The Tragically Hip

August 6, 2016

Self care and music? Absolutely!!

Music reflects our unique and individual likes. Think about it, a bunch of notes that can stir emotions, inspire us to create change, to have dreams of hope.    Yes it is how we feel with the ‘special’ sound, that ‘special’ band.      The Tragically Hip certainly is ‘special’. Their  ability to create the sense of community with songs about Canada, songs that reflect powerful messages sparking creative social conscience.  Music enthusiasts of all ages enjoy The Tragically Hip.

In 1996 I became one of the many hooked on the music of The Tragically Hip and have been fortunate to share the experiences with my daughter. Like anything beautiful, magical, we want it to last forever and sometimes, sadly events happen which no one can control. News of Gord Downie’s terminal  diagnosis stunned Canada.  I can only imagine the impact on Gord, his family, friends, his band mates and rest of us who were shocked with the news.    Yet the triumph of The Tragically Hip is in their spirit of never giving up, to give us one more ‘special’ night. And they did just that for Winnipeg fans August 5th.

The sixteen thousand people at the MTS Centre enjoyed a spectacular show. The music, the showmanship and enthusiasm of lead singer Gord Downie and musical ability of The Tragically Hip brought the audience to their feet with cheers for the entire evening.   There was no sense of ‘this is the end’, but the atmosphere from the  crowd was of sincere thanks, appreciation and enjoyment.

The triumph of The Tragically Hip is the gift of their enduring music, the friendship of the group, the commitment to each other and finally the willingness to give us one more night of their magic.    For that I say thank you.Gord
