Protecting those most vulnerable is our moral responsibility. Our children are innocent of the finality with life, the possible dangers and consequences of their decisions. Often targeted by predators. The scary reality is that no one is immune to this violence. As a parent the ultimate fear is a child abduction. The anguish and emotional trauma of not knowing what has happened to your child. The Amber Alert was created to provide immediate information to all of society, description of suspect, the child, vehicle make and model, and police phone numbers to call in any sightings and maybe save a child.
Several times on Sunday night, while watching TV, the Amber Alert flashed across the screen describing the abduction of a young boy in Orillia, Ontario. The voice describing the child, suspect, vehicle and liscence plate. As a parent this was a powerful reminder of how technology can help rescue our children.
As parents it is hard to comprehend that people who saw this Amber Alert would be bothered enough by the few seconds of program interruption, to call and complain to the police. Yes there was an interruption, but try to put this in perspective. Think of the child who was abducted and his family, any parent who has had to endure the hours, days, years and in many cases an eternity of not knowing what has happened to their abducted child. It says something about the character of a person who cannot see the benefit of the Amber Alert. I would only hope that those who complained will never have to experience the pain of their child being abducted. This is an opportunity to educate our children on safety and remind ourselves that a life is on the line when the Amber Alert flashes across the screen.
