“Speak up, speak out” Sexual misconduct and the GOOGLE Global walkout! About time!
From the Guardian “Thousands of Google staff across the world have staged a series of walkouts in protest at claims of sexual harassment, gender inequality and systemic racism.”
“Enough is enough is enough!” she shouted, to cheers.
“Every single person at Google is exceptional … it is absolutely disgusting that anyone thinks you can be less than exceptional, worse than that, you can be negligent about sexual assault, sexual harassment and abuse of power.”
“The Walkout for Real Change protest comes a week after it emerged that Google gave a $90m (£70m) severance package to Andy Rubin, the creator of the Android mobile phone software, but concealed details of a sexual misconduct allegations that triggered his departure. Rubin has denied the allegations.”
Workplace bullying, racism, gender inequity have no place in the world of 2018.
Sexual harassment shatters victims. You feel like there are no options, damned if you speak up and damned if you remain silent. You have to work with the perpetrator. The ‘Just get over it’ is common for those who have no idea about the emotional trauma victims suffer from sexual harassment. Careers are ruined, sexual harassment impact your relationships, your sense of trust and sense of safety in the workplace. That emotional stress does not stop at the parking lot, but ripples into all aspects of the victim’s life, family, professional and personal relationships and as parents.
“I’m here protesting against harassment in the workplace, to make sure we don’t protect or support those perpetrators of harassment,” one demonstrator told Sky News. “People are supporting those who have been harassed in any workplace situation, by any employer, and this is just part of the movement.”
Speaking up about sexual harassment takes courage. There is always the risk of RETRIBUTION!
If management makes the choice to do nothing about sexual harassment then the victims are only re-victimized. Why should a manager who ‘performs/makes money’ be given a pass to abuse employees? If nothing is done to stop the perpetrators who think they have the right to commit sexual harassment and assault, then the violence continues and like domestic violence escalates.
“Individual speakers recounted sexual comments from superiors, and months- or years-long ordeals with human resources officials who often urged silence.”
“I feel like I’m leading young girls and boys to the slaughter,” said one speaker, who identified herself as an employee who works on Android applications for children. “I mean, why would you want to go into tech if it’s like this?”
Keep the conversation going to end sexual harassment in the workplace,
support victims, investigate complaints, and hold perpetrators accountable.
Everyone needs to buy into the benefits of a healthy and respectful workplace just make good business sense.
