It is a tragedy for all nations, waking up to the news of another terrorist attack. Another reminder of how intolerance breeds hate and violence. Another city in mourning for the victims and another country suffering from the trauma of these attacks. Oh let’s not forget the children whose view of a safe world has been replaced with one of fear. There is no way to legitimize this cowardly violence directed at innocent people and we have seen this throughout history. Distorted reality? Power? Mental health? Poverty? Revenge? Injustices? Another day to ask questions of how do we change the mindset of hate and fear? How can we use our words and bridge the gap to understanding and acceptance? It is times like these where we must resist the urge to dehumanize the other. Would I feel different if it was me or my family? Maybe, but I think who we are is defined by our actions/reactions in the face of fear and sadness. Would I want to see the cycle of violence ended, yes. “An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.” Mahatma Gandhi
“The attacks, claimed by jihadist group Islamic State (IS), murdered people at Brussels international airport and in a metro train in the heart of the Belgian capital. And the targets were among the most sensitive in Europe. Brussels is home to the EU, Nato, international agencies and companies, as well as Belgium’s own government. Not only is Brussels a high-profile target for Islamists, Belgium has struggled with Islamist groups for years and hundreds of its citizens have been lured into fighting for IS in Syria and Iraq.”
