RCMP shooting. How can we keep our officers safe?

August 30, 2018

The news of another police officer shooting hits hard to all Canadians

especially for police officer both serving and retired.   It takes courage to work as a police officer in the rural communities where help is so far away, that it is like being on the moon.

Our men and women who serve the country put their lives on the line everyday. Another sad day for my police community.

This shooting is triggering for many who may feel vulnerable out on patrol.

You don’t have to be involved in a shooting to suffer from  anxiety and PTSD. Seek out supports, ask for help.

I can remember getting that call of an armed and dangerous killer

who had just shot his wife. It was night, dark, I was alone in the police car and it was scary. Thoughts of ‘what if?’ and different scenarios racing in my mind.

Serving and surviving 20years.

What needs to be done to keep our officers safe?

Having the long gun registry, this gives officers the tools to be prepared when they stop a vehicle, attend a house, and respond to other calls.
Total ban or severely restricted hand gun access, NATO approved assault weapons (light weight, small, automatic), Two person patrols, four eyes are better than two.

Our thoughts of support for the officer, the family, co- workers and all those who serve.
