New laws needed as protection order fails again.
As a society we must feel a sense of profound loss. Listening to the news then reading about how protection orders have failed again. Another woman is hunted down and killed. No other way to say it but that was the reality for Camille Runke and a few weeks ago for Selena Keeper. How many other victims whose name may not make the front page news?
“Camille Runke, 49, obtained a protection order on July 24 against her husband, Kevin Runke.
In her affidavit, Camille said she had called police earlier that morning after the man showed up at her residence with what appeared to be an “air gun” and damaged some property including cutting her brake hoses on her vehicle. She also said her estranged partner had access to a rifle.
“He has been stalking my home, and I have witnesses other than myself,” Camille told a magistrate. “I fear for what he will do next.””
How many women have to be murdered and missing before there are changes to the current laws (seizure of weapons, enforcement and arrest, denying access) on protecting women from violence, being shot, beaten and murdered. Have we become complacent in the blame the victims with the questions of ‘why don’t they leave?’
There is a problem with the current system. What can we do to fix it so no one else’s daughter, mother, sister, granddaughter, grandmother is murdered.
