Our choice or instinct? Switching from police officer to parenting in an instant!

August 30, 2016

It seems in the news all we read about is bad behaviours by the police. I thought to write a post on something really positive and special that the officer did above the call of duty.  Impaired drivers are a menace on the road and as police officers it is our duty to stop and arrest such drivers.  What happens when you find a little baby in the backseat and the mother is too drunk to even tell you the baby’s name?

Derrick Graham is a senior trooper in  West Virginia who arrested a woman  for impaired driving.   As the officers were taking inventory of the vehicle, noticed a little baby in the back seat, wearing only a diaper and covered in filth. Officer Graham reacted quickly.

“And just in my head, I’m a father myself, and I couldn’t sit there and let him . . . I couldn’t let him sit in that,” he said.

“It was almost just my dad instinct popped into play,” Graham said. “Forget state trooper, forget law enforcement officer. It was dad that took over, said ‘I gotta clean this little guy up.’ ”

We all make choices everyday on how to react and behave. This is a nice story about the kindness of a man who happens to be a police officer .   I would hope, and like to think, that there are more officers that mirror these qualities.
