Every women deserves to be safe at home and work. Ending a violent/controlling relationship should not be the end of her life.
“Legislative changes to give protection orders more teeth in Manitoba could come as early as next month.
Justice Minister Gord Mackintosh said the province’s review of its Domestic Violence and Stalking Act hopes to bring forth legislative, organizational or training changes by early December, including a provision that could make firearm bans mandatory for people who have protection orders imposed against them.”
“Mackintosh described the case as “just another horrid, horrid tragedy that the family has to endure for generations, and we have to take lessons from these horrors.”
“Protection orders are meant to protect victims of stalking or abuse and must be granted by a magistrate in court. Victims must apply for protection orders and convince the court they are in danger. Current laws allow for the court to impose weapons prohibitions when it grants protection orders, but the practice is not mandatory. The province has said only about half of all requested protection orders are granted. Mackintosh said legislative changes to the way protection orders are granted in Manitoba are “highly likely,” and expected by early December.”
