As we stepped foot into the Seaside Grove Resort, we were greeted by a warm and friendly staff that instantly made us feel at home. The resort was a paradise oasis, with a sparkling pool that beckoned us to dive right in. But what truly sets this place apart was its incredible attention to detail, including catering to my gluten-free needs. We were treated like royalty throughout our stay, indulging in the resort’s lavish offerings and feeling like pampered VIPs.
But our escapades didn’t stop at the resort. Oh no, we were eager to explore the treasures that lay beneath the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Armed with our snorkeling gear, we plunged into the chilly embrace of the sea and were rewarded with a spectacle of vibrant marine life. Playful fish danced around us, creating a magical underwater ballet that etched memories in our hearts forever. It was a reminder that sometimes the most enchanting moments are found beneath the surface. Both in the sea and in life itself.
No trip to Greece would be complete without delving into its rich history. So, we embarked on a thrilling taxi ride to the Mycean ruins, where time seemed to stand still. Amidst our adventures, we stumbled upon an extraordinary display of kindness at The Grove. Stray cats had found refuge within the resort’s grounds, and the staff’s unwavering compassion for these furry friends was awe-inspiring. Their dedication to ensuring the cats’ well-being showcased the boundless love and humanity that resided within their souls. A hidden gem in the mountains of Greece and a town called Leonidio.
After the Sea Grove Hotel, we had a breathtaking hour-long drive up and down the winding, narrow roads, we arrived at the enchanting town of Leonidio. Nestled amidst the mountains, this picturesque village welcomed us with open arms. As we entered, we were captivated by its quaint charm, a harmonious blend of historic buildings, and modern architecture.
The rooftops adorned with vibrant red ceramic tiles contrasted beautifully against the lush greenery, abundant flower trees, and bushes that lined the streets. The white walls of the buildings added a touch of elegance to the scene.
Walking through the narrow streets felt like stepping into a world of wonder. At every turn, we were greeted by church towers, stone fences, and towering cliffs that seemed to defy gravity. These colossal cliffs, painted in the same captivating red hue as the rooftops, proudly overlooked the town, summoning the fearless rock climbers among us, though we ourselves were content to admire their majestic presence. What truly mesmerized us were the tiny white structures scattered amidst the verdant trees, perched precariously on the cliffs’ edges.
As we meandered through the streets, we found ourselves intermittently surprised, uncertain if we were in the countryside or a bustling town. The sounds of everyday life added to the charm. Walking on the cobblestones, we caught snippets of bleating goats, clucking chickens, crowing roosters, and the laughter of children, all intermingled with the hum of motorbikes and scooters. It was a symphony of everyday life, a beautiful symphony indeed.
To our delight, our hotel, Archontiko Chioti, and helpful staff, exceeded our expectations, resembling the images we had seen on their website. It felt like a stroke of luck to find ourselves in such a marvelous place once again. The hotel, resembling a castle-like structure, boasted an inviting outdoor pool area. The staff welcomed us with warm hospitality, treating us like old friends. As we were led to our room, we marveled at the wood ceilings, stone walls, and modern furnishings. It had all the conveniences of a city hotel but with an undeniable charm that transported us to another time. My husband and I exchanged glances, silently acknowledging that we could easily envision ourselves living in a place like this.
Over the course of several days, we embarked on invigorating hikes up the hills, immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings. Unlike many Canadians, it seemed that not enough people had discovered this hidden gem in Greece. To us, this was a tragedy because Leonidio offered the perfect setting for a relaxing holiday, outdoor adventures, cultural encounters, and the opportunity to expand our comfort zones while practicing a new language in a foreign land. A smile and our earnest attempts to say “please,” “thank you,” “hello,” and “good morning” in Greek using a translator app were all it took to spread kindness and forge new friendships.
To accommodate my gluten-free diet, the hotel went above and beyond, taking special care to ensure there was no contamination. Each morning, they presented a delightful array of gluten-free products, allowing me to indulge without worry. In fact, the Greek breakfasts were a gastronomic delight! Featuring fresh meats, cheeses, eggs, locally made sweets, various breads, cakes, yogurt, fresh orange juice and piping hot coffee. The tantalizing variety left us in awe. Lemon and orange trees all throughout the town and in yards, certainly, something we don’t see in Manitoba. Ancient-looking olive trees and vineyards in the countryside.
Numerous restaurants in the area offered exceptional coffee and a wide range of delectable local dishes. The portions were so generous that we often found ourselves with leftovers, which we happily packed into doggy bags. The many cats hanging around the coffee shops and restaurants managed to be fed by the generous patrons. These scrumptious treats are served as delightful snacks during moonlit walks under the starry sky.
Embarking on the numerous walks up and down the hills provided us with more than just exercise; it was an exhilarating journey through breathtaking landscapes basking in the glorious sunshine. As the day drew to a close, we found solace and tranquility by the poolside at our hotel, nestled amidst the majestic cliffs. The evening ambiance was nothing short of awe-inspiring, with the moon casting a warm glow, the stars shimmering and sparkling above, and the open-air setting allowing us to savor the authenticity of Greek cuisine. This last night was a truly romantic affair, with every element coming together to create an enchanting experience.
However, what truly sets this trip apart was the exceptional hospitality we encountered at every turn. The locals we met were warm, and welcoming, and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was remarkable. They say a picture speaks a thousand words, and the rustic yet aesthetically captivating images I’ve included will convey the beauty of this tiny, charming village far better than any description.
As with all holidays, our time eventually came to an end, but the final day held its own adventure. We opted to rent a local taxi from Evagelos D. Sarris Cab Company, and our driver, Peter, who spoke little English while my Greek skills were even more limited, turned out to be an unexpected source of laughter, information, and heartfelt connection. Utilizing the Google Translate app, we engaged in three hours of lively conversation, touching on everything from politics to personal stories. Upon reaching the Holiday Inn hotel in Athens, Peter bid us farewell with a warm hug and extended an invitation for us to dine with his wife upon our return to Greece. This continued display of hospitality was a testament to the kindness we experienced throughout our journey.
Our few days in Leonidio were truly extraordinary, leaving us with lasting memories. We eagerly look forward to returning to this mountain paradise soon. I would strongly recommend a trip to the village of Leonidio and this hotel for its beauty and charm.
Travel is a blend of curiosity and adventure, urging us to step beyond our comfort zones and immerse ourselves in new destinations and cultures. During our discussions with the locals, we discovered the complexities of Greek society, including political dynasties and limited access to social programs in certain regions. As we reflected on these conversations, we appreciated the privileges we enjoy in Canada, such as healthcare, a robust education system and accountability for corruption within our government.
As I have said, our Greek Odyssey was filled with valuable lessons, from learning a new language (with a little help from Google Translate) to immersing ourselves in a vibrant culture and witnessing landscapes that were a stark departure from our Canadian surroundings. Despite a few challenges, such as navigating dietary restrictions and a brief bout of mountain sickness (from accidental gluten contamination), we were rewarded with the friendliness of the local people, authentic Greek cuisine, and the glorious Mediterranean sun.
Without a doubt travel has a remarkable way of fostering understanding between people and nations. Besides, it has ignited within us an insatiable desire to return. We eagerly anticipate the day we can embark on another adventure, building bridges of understanding and experiencing the wonders that await us.
